Google raises stakes with disruptive calling service
Google raises stakes with disruptive calling service
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Google Inc.'s effort unveiled earlier this week to expand the use of its Internet-calling service by enabling easy access through email accounts is likely to increase its status as a competitive threat to an already-wary telecommunications industry.
Google Voice was met with sharp criticism last year from traditional telecom giants such as AT&T Inc. /quotes/comstock/13*!t/quotes/nls/t (T 26.60, -0.10, -0.38%) , which argued with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission that it should be regulated as a traditional telecom service. Google countered that as a free Internet service, Google Voice is exempt from such regulation. See story about the FCC's examination of Google Voice.
Cell tower for your homeWalt Mossberg tells us about solution for people who have weak or no cellular service in their homes and why the big wireless companies are keep quiet about it.
Now, Google /quotes/comstock/15*!goog/quotes/nls/goog (GOOG 451.00, +0.02, +0.00%) is making it easier to use Google Voice, by providing instant access through the company's Gmail accounts.
The Mountain View, Calif.-based Internet major is also deploying a related marketing campaign, which will have it placing at least five custom-made phone booths at airports and college campuses around the U.S., where potential users can pick up a hand set and sample the service.
Google on Wednesday unveiled its Gmail voice service, which enables users to call any phone on Google Voice directly through their email account. Calls made to phones within the U.S. and Canada are free, at least until the end of the year, while charges for international calls are billed at rates as low as 2 cents a minute.
Google said that by midday Thursday, over 1 million calls had been placed through the service. Google spokesman Randall Sarafa said rates charged from international calls enable the company to subsidize the free calls in North America.
Challenging rivals
The availability of Google Voice through email presents a new potential challenge to other companies, including Skype S.A., the Internet-calling service provider that filed for an initial public offering of shares earlier this month.
Google's Gmail voice service is designed to avoid some of the steps required to use Skype, by working inside of an Internet browser rather than through software downloaded to a computer.
In addition, Google's free calling through Gmail to phones in North America compares to Skype's rate of 2.1 cents a minute for calls to phones in the U.S.
Skype is partially owned by online auctioneer eBay Inc. /quotes/comstock/15*!ebay/quotes/nls/ebay (EBAY 22.73, -0.43, -1.86%)
The Gmail voice service also represents a threat to more traditional telecommunications companies, which are already seeing customers scrap their landline service in favor of other options.
"It certainly is an indirect threat, and over the long term, it could evolve to be a direct threat," Gartner Inc. analyst Ray Valdes said of Google Voice.
While online call quality may not yet be able to exactly match what a traditional telecom can provide, Google is likely to continue improving the tool, Valdes said.
"Google's big enough that eventually it will be stepping on different industry players," including Skype, telecoms and even other Internet firms offering an increasing array of communications services, the analyst said.
An AT&T spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment. A Verizon Communications Inc. /quotes/comstock/13*!vz/quotes/nls/vz (VZ 29.39, -0.11, -0.37%) spokesman also did not respond to a request for comment.
AT&T fired off a letter to the FCC last year, complaining that Google Voice is a "creatively packaged" traditional telecom service, and that Google's practice of blocking certain, costly calls on the service violates the same so-called network neutrality principles that Google has long espoused. See story about AT&T's complaint about Google Voice.
The FCC has in the past penalized companies for blocking calls that result in expensive termination fees for carriers.
According to network neutrality proponents, all traffic and services should be allowed equal access to a network. The FCC has backed that view, though its ability to regulate the issue has been called into question. Operators maintain that they should be free to restrict some services on their networks that hog bandwidth and hinder quality for other users.
Google's Sarafa declined to comment on how the Gmail voice service might be received by traditional telecoms. He deferred to statements publicly posted last year by Google's Washington telecom and media counsel Richard Whitt, where Whitt writes that telecom carriers' argument that Google Voice should be regulated "doesn't fly."
Whitt acknowledges that Google does block some calls on Google Voice, but only those connected to "traffic pumping schemes" aimed at gouging higher fees from carriers.
In addition, Whitt writes: "The FCC's open Internet principles apply only to the behavior of broadband carriers -- not the creators of Web-based software applications."
Earlier this month, Google and Verizon jointly published a public policy proposal that riled network neutrality proponents, because it did not call for strict network neutrality principles to be applied to wireless networks or certain future services. See report on Internet neutrality proposal from Google and Verizon.

Auditors question U.S. wireless competition
by Marguerite Reardon Font sizePrintE-mailSharePost a comment Yahoo! Buzz
.Share 00diggsdigg American wireless customers are paying less for cell phone service than they did a decade ago, but they have fewer choices of carriers, a report from the Government Accountability Office said Thursday.
The GAO is the audit arm of Congress, and in the report there was both good and bad news for consumers. The good news is that the average price for wireless services declined each year from 1999 to 2008, the GAO said, citing Consumer Price Index data. In fact, average prices in 2009 were half the prices in 1999, the report said.
"This illustrates that consumers are generally getting more wireless services (such as more voice minutes of use) for lower costs than they were 10 years ago," the GAO said.
CTIA, the trade group that represents the wireless industry, said the GAO's findings confirm that healthy competition in the wireless market exists and is benefiting consumers.
"In finding that wireless consumers are seeing 'lower prices and better coverage,' today's GAO report confirms what we've been saying for a long time--that the U.S. wireless industry is extremely competitive and continues to respond to increasing consumer demand by delivering real benefits for American consumers," CTIA president and CEO, Steve Largent said in a statement.
But the GAO didn't exactly say that the market was competitive. In fact, the report points out that consumers have fewer choices of service providers today than they did a decade ago. The report said that four major U.S. operators--Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile USA--dominate the market with about 90 percent market share. This leaves little room for regional companies to compete.
The GAO's findings are in line with a report the Federal Communications Commission issued earlier this year. For the first time, the FCC did not say the wireless industry was competitive, and instead said it had become concentrated. The FCC said 60 percent of the nation's subscribers and revenue come from the country's two largest wireless providers: AT&T and Verizon Wireless.
Consumer advocates say these findings are bad news for consumers because it allows the market to be controlled by a few major players.
"The GAO's findings, together with the FCC's recent report on wireless competition, paint a clear picture of an increasingly concentrated industry in which competitors and consumers pay high prices to pad the high profit margins of AT&T and Verizon," Chris Riley, counsel for the consumer advocacy group Free Press, said in a statement. "Inflated backhaul costs, misguided spectrum policies, and exclusive rights to popular devices have fostered an environment where companies cannot compete on a level playing field. With the lack of competition, consumers are paying the price through early termination penalties, hidden and vague usage restrictions, and nontransparent, nonsensical charges and fees."
The FCC has made spurring competition one of its goals as part of the National Broadband Plan. The agency is currently looking at ways to get more spectrum into the hands of wireless operators to feed demand for more mobile services, but the agency also hopes to attract new service providers to the wireless broadband market.
In the last auction, the FCC instituted a provision in the rules that required the winner of a certain block of licenses to make any network built with that spectrum to be open to other carriers and devices. Verizon Communications won that spectrum in the auction and is using it to build its 4G wireless network using a technology called LTE or Long Term Evolution.
The GAO's report could help shape policy going forward. It could influence future rules on wireless auctions. And it may influence policy makers and congressional leaders on Capitol Hill as the heated Net neutrality debate comes to a head.
Phone companies say they are willing to accept some rules or regulations for traditional wired broadband networks. But they say that wireless should be treated differently. In a joint proposal submitted to lawmakers and other policy officials, Google and Verizon argued that not only are wireless networks more constrained, but they are also more competitive than wireline networks.
This is true in the sense that most people in the U.S. only have at best two choices for broadband service. But most of the major markets in the U.S have only four choices for wireless service, a number that consumer advocates worry is too low to keep the industry in check.
The GAO report also found that wireless subscriptions have exploded in the last decade growing from 3.5 million in 1999 to 285 million at the end of 2009. Nearly 40 percent of U.S. households rely primarily on wireless service, the report found. And the report also noted that coverage has improved.
As for state of competition, the GAO said more information is needed.
"In particular, additional data could help assess the competitiveness of small and regional carriers, as well as shed light on the impact of switching costs for consumers," the GAO said in its report.
Rick Kaplan, chief counsel for FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, said the commission will address the issues suggested in the GAO report.
"We agree with GAO that data-driven analysis of the wireless marketplace is essential for pro-innovation, pro-competition policies," he said in a statement. "The FCC has taken proactive steps to improve our data and analysis, including collecting new and better data for this year's Mobile Wireless Competition Report."

Sidekick LX Cell Phone Review
Sidekick LX Cell Phone Review
T-Mobile Sidekick LX is a messaging oriented cell phone which is designed to improve the ease of messaging. It comes with a full QWERTY keyboard which is concealed under its beautiful screen. Not surprising, it goes well for messaging, emailing and other texting purposes.
The first, most noticeable difference, with this new product is that it has a much bigger screen; a 3″ screen with 65,000 colors at a 400×240 pixel (landscape) resolution. Even with a bigger screen, the phone is very slim and won’t look uncomfortable in the pocket of a tight pair of jeans.
On the part of usability, T-Mobile did not use the Android operating system (which T-Mobile G1 uses) on Sidekick LX – instead it contains a unique operating system designed solely to work with the Sidekick LX just perfectly, and it does it well. The unique operating system does mean, however, a certain lack of applications available for it (unlike phones running Symbian or Windows Mobile for example) but it does support Java so most things you would want to do with your phone should be available.
The camera on the phone is a very basic 1.3 megapixel camera that can’t record video – much like how the iPhone has been designed (update: T-Mobile later released a software update which includes video recording, playback and sharing capabilities; enhanced web browsing and A2DP support). A new feature in the Sidekick LX is that it has a camera flash, but seems to have no other camera features that many of its rivals do, including a lack of autofocus and no options on how to set the camera to different modes or conditions. Internal memory comes in at a mere 64Mb, so there isn’t much scope to store many MP3 files or photos, but there is the opportunity to expand this with a microSD card.
Most modern phones support 3G internet connectivity for a world that demands to be constantly online, but the Sidekick LX only manages a mere GPRS/EDGE connection. On standby, the phone lasts around 4 days which isn’t bad for a smart phone, but for such a less taxing phone could be a lot better. On the other hand, total talk time is rated at around 7 hours.
In conclusion, the T-Mobile Sidekick LX has responded to some consumers wanting a good looking, affordable phone that allows them to message with ease. However, it might be better to fork out a little more money to get a more well featured phone – namely a better internet connection, better camera and more internal memory – that can be purchased for less than a hundred bucks more.

Buying a cell phone is more than a matter of choosing a handset–you also have to pick a service provider, or carrier, as well. We have always been fans of Nokia products, they make a large variety of handsets from basic entry level ones to high end smartphones. They rarely disappoint in quality and hence we pounced on the Nokia 5800 when the manufacturer gave it to us for GSM cell phones review.
GPS, once a luxury to have in a mobile phone has now become a necessity. So naturally, more and more manufacturers are providing it and Nokia is the latest player to join the bandwagon. We have done GSM cell phone review for GPS based smartphones earlier and we saw that the maps occupy lots of space on the memory card and hence you don’t get to use the full capacity of the card for storing music or movies.
Previously, you had to pay a fee for subscribing to location based service like TeleNav. Google later announced that Google Maps Navigation would be providing these for free and now Nokia is also doing the same.
In our GSM cell phones review section, we had done Nexus One which is an amazing device from the stables of Google. Nokia 5800 cannot match the prowess of Nexus One because the latter is altogether new technology and the Nokia product is just a GPS enabled edition of the XpressMusic 5800 device.
When Nokia gave us the 5800 Navigation Edition for GSM cell phones review, they told us that the handset would be available in the market for $299. That is a good price, considering the phone is unlocked. Usually unlocked phones come with astronomical price tags slapped on them. What sweetens the deal is the fact that you get a solid phone and a great multimedia player as well.
Other than the GPS features, the Nokia 5800 is essentially the same. It has a 3.2 inch touch screen which gives a resolution of 640×360 pixels. Our only complaint is that the touchscreen isn’t capacitive like iPhone, so you will have to use a stylus for precise touch.
Nokia never disappoints in music quality and neither did the 5800. The handset comes with 3.5 mm headphone jack that lets you plug in any standard headphones. Music heard over the external speakers also sound good.
The 3.2 MP camera come with built in flash that lets you take good photos. The camera can also record videos in its camcorder mode and you get to choose between five quality modes. For storing your photos, videos and music, Nokia 5800 supports up to 8 GB of memory cards and also has 81 MB of internal memory.
We, at GSM cell phones review finally tested the phone for call quality and we didn’t have anything to complain about. The voices were natural, we didn’t experience any dropped calls and our friends could hear us clearly on the phone.

Cell Phone Reviews-To Text Or Not To Text
Cell Phone Reviews-To Text Or Not To Text

Cell phone reviews have consistently shown that US businesses and consumers handed over a massive $118 billion for their wireless products and services in 2004. Even more surprising is the fact that they spent $104.4 billion to purchase wireless services alone.
One of those wireless services is called short messaging service or text messaging. Obviously it is an important area of communication. It definitely is a cheaper way to go especially when compared with making a normal cellular call.
Mobile messaging is far and away the most modern way to communicate in todays world. It is instant, undoubtedly mobile, and very personal. Studies have brought to the surface a very interesting piece of information.
They show that young people are at the same time the driving force and the slaves of a growing text messaging culture. That kernel of truth gives us a better view of some of the complexities that cellular phones have brought into our lives.
Indeed wireless communication has enabled even the shy and unassuming to develop relationships that they would never have been able to develop in a face-to-face situation. Texting has allowed them to shield appearance, stuttering and shyness.
It has also allowed them a greater freedom of self expression and enabled them to nurture personal relationships that may not have otherwise had the chance to develop. Text messages are mainly used for information purposes, general chatting, maybe sending jokes and certainly other fun activities.
Sending text messages is very easy. All you basically need to have is a mobile phone with the capability. The vast majority of mobile service providers offer text messaging for birthdays, friend-to-friend, lovers, jokesters and so much more. Downloading them from a website on the internet is another fun option.
Most of these online websites also provide services like ring tones, wallpapers, screen savers, and picture messages for your phone. Once you are on the website of your choice, select the message that you want and click the download tab.
You will then be prompted to enter your mobile phone number. Your choice will then be downloaded and you will receive a message on your cell phone that the download was successful.
Open the message and save it in a folder. Be mindful that the charges for the text message will be deducted from your cellular account. Proving once again that there is no such thing as a free lunch.
Again text messaging is inexpensive so if you are a die hard cell phone lover then you should always include it in your service plan. It is also handy to have if you travel a lot. However, using a regional service plan might serve your needs even better. I say that because regional plans generally have a good mixture of minutes, features and prices.
The key will always be to discuss and weigh your service options with the service provider. Do not be too anxious to sign on the dotted line and go. You may regret that later. Always, but always read and understand the fine print.
Cell phone reviews that disseminate timely and valuable information on cellular service plans are very much needed. Do you understand all of the intricacies of your current service plan?
