Verizon Wireless 3G Dirty Little Secret - But Wait, They are Ending 3G Service? Who knew!!
Verizon's dirty little secret!
So June 30th 2018 rolls around. We are a reseller of Verizon old stock handsets, as well as, Page Plus Cellular and a host of other carriers. Whether it be new overstock or refurbished Asurion phones that they have too many of. They get dumped to sellers like us to pass on in the market at a good price. Or really at the price people should have paid to begin with. So the end of June comes and we keep getting phone calls and emails all of a sudden. Hey. you sold us this phone and it is not compatible with Verizon any longer. Say what? Well a little research into this and come to find out Verizon sent their zealots, or resellers if you a note not to activate 3G phones any longer. This would include but is not limited to, flip phones, basic slider phones, plus a host of IOT Internet of Things and the common people are screwed! From Seniors who have no desire what-so-ever to own a smart phone to students, to people just trying to keep within their budget who need a simple phone.
What does this mean to anyone with a 3G phone or who is interested in purchasing one? Well the real news is, which verizon has not come out public with. Is that as of Decemeber 31st, 2018 they will no longer activate 3G phones. Prior to December 31st, you can activate one, but not at a verizon reseller store due to them already getting notice plus they do not want to, to begin with because they want to sell you a 2 year contract. Which also boggles my mind, being a verizon customer since 1991. Yes, 1991 when each phone call was 99 cents a minute during off peak times and 1.99 for peak times. Wonder how they got so big so fast? Raping the common man for a simple phone call is what it is.
So while corporate will activate your 3G device, they will not tell you that they are shutting off their 3G network , 18 months after December 31st, 2018. I mean c'mon, how much would it cost them to keep the legacy network up and running and also use it as a fallback for outages and bottle necking of the 4G network. Sure 5G is coming, but lets face it, there are millions of people still using basic phones that have no interest whatsoever in using a smartphone. Example, my brother is 57 years young, works for the electric company and says i will be dammed if I have a smart phone up by the high voltage lines and drop it. Let alone having to use a touch screen in the weather and not being able to push an actual button.
Just like 2G is gone and done with GSM and the like. Soon will be 3G. Meanwhile people like us, have 1000's of devices sitting on the shelf, waiting for customers to purchase them. Glad that we heard about it now. It gives us a little under 6 months to sell all of them before Verizon fires the final shot. Be it as it may, we have no say in this. However it is rude to put it lightly for Verizon not to finally announce this to the public but they will still take your money, knowing sure as hell that they are not going to let your new device operate 18 months from now. Greed. Pure greed!!!
Well there is your warning!
